Mission Statement

Greetings, Cinephiles!

This is the Franchise Nerd speaking.

For this oh-so-exciting First Post, Message Prime or whatever you want to call it, please allow me to justify myself.

This blog is about movies. Specifically, reviews of movies. "What, another movie review blog?" you say. Yes, I agree it's old hat. However, being the obsessive nerd that I am - and being an utter sucker for movie franchises - I've decided to launch this blog anyway, with the particular intention of reviewing movie franchises; that is, series of films bearing a particular brand name or forming part of a larger universe through shared characters or events. The latter characteristic is currently rare amongst film franchises, but I have a sneaking suspicion that after the success of Marvel's The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy in summer 2012, we as moviegoers are going to see many more such crossovers and spin-offs as opposed to straight sequels.

I'm particularly interested in the fictional or 'hyper-real' worlds that these franchises portray, and I intend to take an approach that incorporates each film's or series's effectiveness at world-building as well as judging their competency as pieces of art/crap. Wherever possible, I'd like to build up small databases of information and statistics about each movie franchise that I review. This is to satisfy the irrepressible numbers-nerd and facts-freak within me.

There are lots and lots of movies I want to review out there, and quite frankly I find it easier to watch films than write about them, so I apologise in advance if it takes me a while to build up a significant database of reviews and facts.

This is my Mission Statement. Therefore, Franchise Nerd will appropriately commence by reviewing the Mission: Impossible series (1996-2011). This has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I just bought and watched the new DVD of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011). Nothing at all.

So long pal,

The Franchise Nerd
